Düsseldorf, Germany, 17 September 2026 – Metalshub, a leading platform provider for the metals and mining industry, is excited to announce its strategic collaboration with Hindalco Industries Limited to advance transparent and competitive price discovery in the global alumina market through digital sales processes. This partnership marks a significant step towards addressing structural inefficiencies and fostering a more liquid and data-driven alumina market.
Smelter-grade alumina, the primary raw material for aluminium production, plays a critical role in global industrial value chains. Yet, the alumina spot market remains constrained by limited liquidity, opaque pricing mechanisms, and a reliance on survey-based indices. Together, Hindalco and Metalshub are taking a pioneering step to modernise this landscape through structured, competitive digital bidding events for spot cargoes that open the market to broader participation and enable more accurate price formation.
Hindalco will leverage the Metalshub platform to host a first-of-its-kind digital tendering process for the sale of metallurgical-grade alumina. By engaging a wider network of qualified buyers in transparent request-for-bid (RfB) processes and enabling them to submit competitive bids confidentially and securely, the initiative enhances market visibility while supporting fair, market-driven pricing outcomes.
“Alumina is a critical raw material for aluminium, a metal that is increasingly enabling lightweighting, recyclability and the transition towards a circular economy. As the alumina market evolves, it is crucial to ensure strong and clear price discovery to effectively balance supply and demand and facilitate market information. By implementing digital tenders for certain spot sales, we aim to broaden market participation, strengthen competitive price discovery and bring greater efficiency and transparency to the alumina market.”
Metalshub’s digital infrastructure enables real-time capture of bid data and provides actionable insights into market dynamics. This supports producers and consumers alike in navigating a traditionally fragmented market, while also addressing operational challenges such as supply security and the time-sensitive handling of alumina.
The initiative builds on Metalshub’s broader track record of enabling transparent price discovery across critical raw materials markets, including lithium and industrial minerals, where digitalisation has proven effective in increasing liquidity and improving commercial outcomes.
“Only a small fraction of the world’s alumina is ever sold in the spot market,” said Dr. Sebastian Kreft, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Metalshub, “which means the few cargoes that do trade openly carry the weight of pricing an entire market. Structured digital tenders change that. They open each cargo to competitive bidding from a wider set of buyers and produce firm, verifiable transaction data rather than voluntarily reported numbers. Metalshub is working closely with the LME and LME sister company CPAL (Commodity Pricing and Analysis Ltd) on supporting more reliable, transaction-based price discovery for critical raw materials, such as alumina. Hindalco is the first major producer to take this step, and we expect others in the industry to follow.”
The first digital tender is expected to take place between October and December 2026. The exact date, quantity and tender specifications will be communicated to registered participants sufficiently in advance.

As demand for aluminium continues to grow, driven by sectors such as automotive, construction, and the energy transition, the need for robust and transparent raw material markets becomes increasingly urgent. Metalshub’s initiative positions the company as a key enabler of this transformation, supporting the aluminium industry in building a more sustainable, efficient, and resilient supply chain.
