Düsseldorf, Germany, 16 June 2026 – Metalshub, a leading platform provider for the metals and mining industry, is pleased to announce that Back to Battery, a Dutch clean-tech startup based in Delft, Netherlands, has joined the Metalshub platform to support both sales and sourcing activities for recycled battery materials.
Back to Battery focuses on closed-loop, hydrometallurgical refining of lithium-ion battery black mass. Through its proprietary process, the company recovers critical raw materials from end-of-life lithium-ion batteries and converts black mass into high-purity outputs, including lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, and graphite, with a stated focus on low waste, low energy consumption, and internal recycling of water and reactants.
By joining Metalshub, Back to Battery aims to leverage the platform’s international network to identify off-takers for recycled lithium carbonate, recycled graphite, and recycled hydrated NCM hydroxide. In parallel, the company will use Metalshub to explore potential black mass providers, reflecting a combined buy-side and sell-side use case in the developing European battery recycling market.
“Joining Metalshub is an important step in bringing our recycled battery materials to a broader network of qualified market participants. Our mission is to close the loop in the European battery value chain by transforming black mass into battery-grade products. Metalshub provides the digital infrastructure and market access needed to support transparent, efficient, and scalable commercialisation.”
The collaboration comes at a time when European battery recycling markets are becoming increasingly important for securing critical raw materials, reducing dependency on primary extraction, and supporting circular supply chains. Back to Battery’s approach aligns with the industry’s shift from mechanical recycling towards higher-value chemical upcycling, where black mass can be refined into materials suitable for reintegration into the battery value chain.
“We are pleased to welcome Back to Battery to Metalshub,” said Dr Frank Jackel, Co-Founder and Managing Director at Metalshub. “Their focus on high-purity recycled battery materials reflects the growing maturity of Europe’s circular battery ecosystem. By supporting both their sales of refined recycled products and their access to black mass providers, Metalshub can help create more transparent, connected, and efficient markets for battery raw materials.”
Back to Battery’s participation further strengthens Metalshub’s role as the digital infrastructure for the recycling and battery materials sector. Metalshub’s platform supports structured negotiations, access to qualified counterparties, and auditable transaction workflows, enabling companies across the value chain to engage more efficiently in markets where liquidity and price transparency are still developing.
