Düsseldorf, Germany, 04 March 2026 – Metalshub, a leading platform provider for the metals and mining industry, today announced the expansion of its collaboration with Batrec Industrie AG, a Swiss-based recycler and part of Veolia, a global leader in environmental services, to support the transparent and structured commercialisation of black mass.
Batrec will leverage Metalshub’s digital Sales Solution to conduct black mass sales through structured bidding events, engaging with selected, qualified market participants. The initiative aims to enhance market access, support price discovery, and contribute to the development of transparent and efficient primary sales mechanisms for battery recycling materials in Europe.
Black mass is a critical intermediate product in the battery recycling value chain, containing valuable metals such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese. As recycling volumes increase globally, market participants are increasingly seeking standardised, auditable sales processes for black mass. Metalshub provides the digital infrastructure to support these evolving market requirements.
“The black mass market is largely supplied by EV battery recycling, whereas Batrec recycles all portable batteries from the Swiss market and customers abroad. This produces black mass with high cobalt content, lower nickel content, and characteristics typical of mixed battery waste. Our collaboration with Metalshub helps us better understand its true value through transparent, data-driven pricing while connecting us with new customers via a structured digital marketplace.”
By digitalising its approach to black mass sales, Batrec aims to align its commercial processes with broader industry efforts to professionalise battery recycling markets and establish robust market standards.
“Transparent and auditable black mass markets are a key building block for a sustainable battery recycling ecosystem,” said Dr. Frank Jackel, Co-Founder and Managing Director at Metalshub. “Batrec’s decision to expand our collaboration reflects a pragmatic and credible approach to market development, grounded in transparency, structure, and trust.”
The announcement highlights the growing role of digital platforms in enabling scalable and sustainable supply chains for battery materials, supporting the objectives of the energy transition.
Batrec Industrie AG is a Switzerland-based recycling company specialising in the recovery of metals from complex industrial residues, including battery-related materials. As part of Veolia, a global leader in environmental services, Batrec delivers advanced recycling solutions that support resource efficiency and circular economy principles across the metals and materials industries.
