Argus Metals Week 2019 – 3D printing and the world of metal powders
Argus Metals Week in London is approaching fast. This year it is covering themes such as the lithium, cobalt, nickel, molybdenum and stainless steel markets as well as sustainable manufacturing.
Our two Co-Founders Dr. Sebastian Kreft and Dr. Frank Jackel will present on the topic of 3D printing and metal powders. What can be expected for the metal powder market in the 3D printing industry?
Both population growth and a rise of the middle class, are increasing the demand for air travel. At the same time, aircraft manufacturers are looking to build lighter planes to save fuel. Therefore, the aviation industry is pushing to implement 3D printing technologies to meet these objectives.
Companies such as Boeing and Airbus, are utilizing 3D printed engine parts from Inconel, a nickel-based superalloy which has excellent strength, heat and fatigue resistance. The use of 3D printing as a mainstream manufacturing process is expected to accelerate growth for nickel powder. According to Grand View Research, the current market size is around 345 mt (USD 72 million) and it is expected to grow fast with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 34.2% reaching 2,570 mt by 2025 (USD 479 million).
Moreover, 3D printed parts made from steel alloy powders are expected to see significant growth in the coming years. However, according to Grand View Research, the demand for steel powder in the 3D printing industry is not expected to be as high as for nickel and titanium powders; parts produced from traditional manufacturing processes will remain more competitive in many areas. Market size is expected to grow from around 187 mt in 2018 to 1,027 mt in 2025. The CAGR from 2018 to 2025 is 28.6%.
